Classroom Evironment
Having a positive classroom environment is crucial to a student's learning. If students are not comfortable in the classroom, they won't ask questions, they won't participate in group discussions, and they certainly will not get the most out of the class. There are various ways teachers promote a positive classroom environment, and below are just 3 ways of mine.
Having classroom rules not only keeps students safe, but they also create a routine. Students need a routine and it's beneficial for them to understand the expectations of the teacher and the consequences of both desirable and undesirable behaviors.
Welcome letters are another way to promote a healthy classroom. The students and their guardians feel a sense of comfort before the school year even begins. I introduce myself in my welcome letter and tell students and their guardians a little bit about myself. I know families can be nervous about sending their child off to school to a teacher they may not know, and I think a welcome letter alleviates some of that anxiety.
I also have a link to a student safety contract for participating in science labs. The contract states what is expected and leaves room for the student and their guardian to sign. Maintaining student safety in the lab is one of the most important jobs of a science teacher. This contract ensures that students will know what is expected of them.
